Hi, Wendy L. Scott-Hawkins; welcome to the Indie Publishing Group website! Introduce yourself to us. Tell everyone who you are, where you’re from, what you enjoy doing, and your hobbies and interests.
Introduce yourself to us!
Hello readers. I’m Wendy, and I’m from Petrolia, Ontario. I grew up in Arkona, Ontario, and I love small-town living. I am a wife and mother of two adult children, and I work full-time as an Educational Assistant/PSW. I try to find time for writing when I’m not busy promoting my books at art and craft shows.
In the winter, I crochet kid’s hats and maybe a denim quilt once in a while. Every day, I try to keep my mind sharp by playing online games like Wordle and Words With Friends. I will never admit to having a green thumb, but I do have several house plants to keep me busy with watering, repotting, and the occasional pest that just won’t go away.
Walking and hiking are my favourite outdoor activities, and I hope to walk some more of the Bruce Trail, Ontario, and visit lots of waterfalls in southwestern Ontario. Volunteering is such a rewarding experience, so I hope to have more opportunities to do so at my church. My husband and I hosted a games night there recently and hope to have another one soon.
Have you got anything you’re working on now?
Unfortunately, no books are in the works, but I’ve started writing Haiku poetry. I started posting one per day but then ran out of steam, so now I try to write and post a few per week.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
I thoroughly enjoyed writing my memoir, but I am trying my hand at children’s books now.
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
The hardest part of self-publishing was staying within a budget I had set from the start. I knew two self-published authors to discuss costs with and tried to stick within that general pricing. I became stressed when it came time to find an interior editor within my budget until I found Indie Publishing Group.
What’s your writing process?
For my memoir, I had a hard time organizing my thoughts, so I used a plot diagram similar to the ones we used in school. Previous to that, I had gathered all my information and put it in chronological order. I also need to have complete silence when I write and no distractions, so I turn my phone off and shut the door to my office.
Which book is your favorite and why?
“Searching For a Stranger and Finding Myself” is my memoir, and it contains some very honest thoughts, emotions, and stories that were sometimes difficult to put into words. Because I was strikingly honest, I put myself in vulnerable positions at times throughout the story, but that’s just me and how I roll.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Favourite fiction authors would have to either be Shari Lapena or James Patterson. Non-fiction authors I enjoy are Cathy Glass, Victoria Twead, and Simon Michael Prior.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
