Cover Design

Here at Indie Publishing Group, we understand the importance of a professional book cover design that will help you sell your book. Your book cover is the first thing any potential customer or reader sees and has to sell your book within seconds.

A professional and attractive book cover design will help your book stand out from the crowd on bookshelves and online platforms such as IngramSpark, Amazon, and Apple iBooks.

We’ve all heard that old saying, ‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ but for most people, it’s the cover that catches their eye first and leads to the next step in the sale process.

For many readers and shoppers, it’s the front cover of your book that will catch their eyes and lead them to read the description or reviews before they take the next step. Without a fantastic front cover, your book is going to struggle to make an impact in the highly competitive publishing industry.

If you need an ebook cover design, paperback cover design, or hardcover book design, we have a professional team to make it happen.

Your book cover is one of the most critical parts of your book and easily one of the most valuable investments you can make in your book.

You’ve spent countless hours writing and editing your book, so the last thing you want to do is cut corners when it comes to the cover design. Your book cover needs to shine and grab the attention of buyers and readers.

At Indie Publishing Group, our experienced and professional graphic design team is standing by to help Canadian authors with their book cover design needs. So if you’re a Canadian or North American author that needs help with a professional cover design, please don’t hesitate to reach out and contact us directly.

Professional Book Cover Design Packages

We’ve been in the publishing industry long enough to understand that everyone has their own specific needs regarding the size and type of professional book cover design package. It’s why we created different cover design packages.

We want Canadian authors to be able to access affordable yet professional, high-quality book cover designs for their books. We can create ebook covers, paperback covers, hardcover covers, and packages that include all three. Our cover design packages will deliver a premium cover design that’s ready to upload to all major self-publishing platforms or to your independent book printer.

What We Need to Know to Design Your Book Cover

Designing a fantastic book cover starts with you! That’s right. We couldn’t create beautiful and eye-catching book covers without the valuable insight of our clients. After all, it’s your book!

We work closely with you from the start with an in-depth design brief that will give us a complete picture of you, your book, and what you’re looking for in a book cover.

If you’re a Canadian or North American author that needs help with a professional cover design and you want to work with a Canadian publishing company, then our team at Indie Publishing Group is here to help, and we’re looking forward to working with you.

In the following section, we will break down our cover design process and tell you how our process works and how we develop our beautiful fiction and non-fiction book cover designs.

1. Front Cover Elements

The first step in our cover design process is getting you, the author, to fill out our cover design brief. Some of the questions we’ll ask you are:

  • The book’s title and subtitle.
  • Names of other similar or popular books in your genre.
  • Some examples of book cover designs that you love.
  • Your chosen trim size and dimensions.
  • A brief synopsis or description of your book.
  • Any images, illustrations, or photos you want to be included on your book’s cover. (All images supplied must be a minimum of 300dpi at the correct size for printed covers).

2. Back Cover Elements

Once the front cover has been designed, it’s time to start on the back cover. For most books, the back cover is a simple continuation of the design from the front. Ebooks only require a front cover and have no back cover. Some of the elements you may want to include on a back cover are:

  • Title and sub-title.
  • Book description.
  • About the author.
  • Author photo and bio.
  • Book endorsements.
  • Credits for illustrators, cover designers, formatters, or editors.
  • Website information, social media links or handles, or contact information.
  • Publisher or company logos.
  • ISBN and barcode.

3. ISBN and Barcode

If you plan on uploading your book and selling it on Amazon KDP, they’ll add the ISBN and barcode to the back cover of your book for you. However, if you’re going with IngramSpark, you’ll need your ISBN and barcode placed on the cover. All self-publishing platforms provide a cover template that is based on your desired trim size, paper type and quality, and page count. If you’re a Canadian author, you can access a free ISBN for your book by visiting ISBN Canada. However, if you plan on getting your books printed through an independent book printer, you may want to consider adding a price to this area.

4. The Spine Area

The standard information which is included on your book’s spine is the title and author name, and some authors also choose to add a small logo or publishing logo. However, not all books are big enough to get enough room on the spine for text.

The width of your spine is determined by the length of your book or how many pages it has. Your final page count is determined after your text has been professionally formatted, and the formatting needs to be complete to finish your book cover design.
