Introduce yourself to us.

Hi, my name is Karen Millett. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I love to read. I love my cat, and I collect cats, unicorns, and My Little Ponies. I’ve been reading since I was able to. I love my books.

I started writing in high school when I had a lot of free time and classes. I started writing fanfic then when I took a writing course, I started to write my own stories. I couldn’t get published except for a couple of poems, so I left it for a long time.

When I was laid off because of the pandemic, I started reading a lot then an idea started working around in my head. I started writing it all down, though not in a straight line, then working from to beginning, I filled out the middle. I kept working on it with the help of a beta reader. I filled in plot holes and gaps and even created a character to fix a lot of holes that I couldn’t find a way to fix.

Then, I finally decided it was time to get it published.

Have you got anything you’re working on now?

The Strong Man Survives is the only book I have written so far. It’s my favorite. It’s my baby.

I don’t know what gave me the idea for it. Sometimes, when I go to bed and get ready to sleep, I play little ideas in my mind, like you were watching a movie but with my own characters and plot. This idea came to me, and it didn’t want to seem to leave my brain, so I just ran with it.

What’s your writing process?

I have no system whatsoever, I don’t think I do anyway.

Something comes to mind, I work on it in my head until I can get a chance to jot it down. I have an app on my phone that’s great for that, I can send my notes to my email.

Sometimes after work, in the evening, or even days off, I just wander into my rec room and jot out whatever happens to be floating around in there while I’m watching videos. I go as far as I can with a scene, stick it in my folder then work on something else. Eventually, it will start falling into place, and I can get it into a sequence.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Morgan Brice, Bobbi Holmes, Rhys Everly, Lee Child, and Meghan Maslow.
