Children’s Author Interview with Carole P. Roman!

Your newest book, ‘The Big Book of Silly Jokes for Kids’ appears to be a departure from your usual work?
Yes, it’s quite a jump from my established genres. It’s a compilation of jokes that are part of our lexicon for years. Some of the jokes are so old I remember my father telling them to me when I was a child.
Does it seriously have 800 jokes? That can’t be right!
Well, it’s not just jokes. There are riddles, brainteasers, tongue twister, and even a section to help a child learn how to create and deliver a joke. It’s a cornucopia of humor, something for everyone.
How did you find all those jokes, it must have taken quite a lot of research?
Most of them are familiar, kind of like you’ve heard it before, but never remember it. The book was created in sections, and the jokes grow more complicated as you get further into each chapter. That way it can appeal to many different ages.
Did you laugh yourself silly while writing it?
Yes! Sometimes the giggles lasted a very long time. I tested the jokes on the people in my office and watched their reactions. I also shared many of them with my grandkids and that was hysterical.
We would share the book, taking turns reading a joke and watching the response. I have a mixed group starting from ages 11-5, both boys and girls. The book provided hours of entertainment for all my grandchildren and we were able to spend our time together.
Interestingly enough, I have a granddaughter who is both speech and learning challenged. She loved delivering the jokes and captured nuances of speech that helped her communicate better. I think the book can serve as a great learning tool, as well.
What part was the children’s favorite?
The Knock knock jokes seemed to be contagious. The kids did them for days, using their imagination to think up more creative combinations. It gave us a serious case of the sillies.
What’s your favorite part of the book?
Actually, the section that teaches children how to create and deliver jokes was my favorite. It’s a useful tool that teaches them how to break the ice and keep a conversation going. The creative part is a good way to stretch their imaginations.
I was delighted what their clever minds came up with and it was fun to watch them learn how to deliver the joke.
