This Week’s Featured Author Interview with
Rayne Dowell
Hi, Rayne Dowell, welcome to the Indie Publishing Group website. Introduce yourself to us. Tell everyone who you are, where you’re from, what do you enjoy doing, hobbies and interests.
Rayne Dowell, I’m an Explorer/Traveller, Energy Guide/Mentor, HSP Trait Advocate, Environmental Advocate, Spiritual Advocate and a Writer. I’m from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I like taking photos of wildlife, writing, reading, traveling, (sometimes cooking), hanging out with friends, organizing HSP Trait Workshops and Discussion Groups, and later participating in the newly forming “Global Cooperative for Sensitive Leaders”.
When did you start writing and why?
I started when I was young, about 7 years old. I just did it for fun and gave my stories to family as gifts at Christmas. I even sealed the envelopes with wax and a ring imprint! Then life got in the way. I took some creative writing courses in my 30’s but didn’t decide to write my first book until now (I’m in my late 40’s).
Which is your favorite book you have written and what gave you the idea for it?
I’ve only written and self-published one book so far. I was… compelled to write it.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
The first title I came up with was long and while I loved it and it was taken from a sentence in the book, it didn’t capture the essence of the book. When thinking of how I could simplify it the title just popped into my head after a meditation.
Who helped you with the cover? Or did you design it yourself? What was your inspiration for your cover design?
I looked around and found a picture online that captured the essence of the book. I gave the picture to a recommended book cover artist on Fiverr and they created the cover from it. I love it! If anyone would like to know the artist just let me know, I highly recommend them.
What are some of the themes of your story?
Transformation, Empowerment, Self-Awareness, Darkness, and Light
What’s your process when you sit down and decide to start writing a book? What is your process and do you have a system?
My book is an autobiography so for me it was about remembering the time sequence – what happened and when, and what I was feeling/thinking/experiencing at the time. It was an interesting process and allowed me to see how much I’d grown and learned. I wrote the outline in longhand outside by a river. I later filled in the details on my computer.
Who are some of your favorite characters and why?
Both the protagonist and the antagonist in my book are my favorite characters – lol! I loved diving into their thought processes, motivations, fears, hopes, and dreams.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
I have so many, I really can’t pinpoint specific authors. My taste ranges from fiction to non-fiction, short stories, novellas, sci-fi, and spiritual. My favorite author changes on a monthly basis – right now it’s Nilanjana Roy.
Have you got anything you’re working on now?
I’m working on the sequel to “Unmasking” now.
If you could have any superpowers what would they be?
I’ll have to think about that one…
If you could travel to any location in the world where would you go?
Well, for me there aren’t “could’s”, I either have or will. I like going to less traveled destinations as I love to visit with the local people and experience life as they do.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years’ time?
I have no idea where this amazing thing called “life” will lead…
