This Week’s Feature Author Interview with

Paul Weil

Hi Paul Weil, welcome to the Indie Publishing Group website. Introduce yourself to us. Tell everyone who you are, where you’re from, what do you enjoy doing, hobbies and interests.

My name is Paul Weil and I am originally from the UK but now live in the Northeast US. Apart from writing and dreaming and dreaming about writing I practice martial arts and enjoy deep electronic music.

When did you start writing and why?

Well, I’ve been writing all my life but about 6 years ago got serious about it and write a little every day, if I can. I started writing seriously because I had the idea for my 5-book series while I was training for a running race. Like Haruki Murakami, the Japanese author, I suddenly realized I could write a novel so I went home and did it.

Which is your favorite book you have written and what gave you the idea for it?

Themis is my first published novel but I have another virtually complete novel, a paranormal thriller that I’m realizing later this year. I’m also writing a sci-fi that I’m quite excited about.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

The title, like the entire series arc, arrived in a flash, which is strange because Themis is a Greek Titaness from ancient mythology and yet somehow, I knew about her. Without actually knowing.

Who helped you with the cover? Or did your design it yourself? What was your inspiration for your cover design?

I’m lucky that my amazing wife, Laura R. Weil, is a very talented artist. The piece was an existing painting and it spoke to me. It’s strange abstract beauty and deep resounding power were perfect for the book.

What are some of the themes of your story?

Good over evil. The corruption of power. Teenagers struggling with their identity. Love and hate. All the big ones.

What’s your process when you sit down and decide to start writing a book? What is your process and do you have a system?

First, I start with the idea. Then comes a rough outline. Then I write the first draft as quickly as possible. Then I rewrite it and once again. After that it’s time for people to read it and give feedback so I can rewrite it once again.

Who are some of your favorite characters and why?

I love Fiona for her struggle with her immense power and how she tries to stay humble and real. I love David because he has the power to heal or kill but he always tries to heal.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Haruki Murakami, J.R.R Tolkien, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Bernard Cornwell.

Have you got anything you’re working on now?

I’m working on a Science Fiction about immortals living among us and their technological advances.

If you could have any super powers what would they be?

If I could have one and only one, it would be the power to heal the sick. Or even better to grant immortality.

If you could travel to any location in the world where would you go?

At this moment, I would say the Big Sur coastline of California.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years’ time?

Healthy, happy, and writing.
